Can't sleep? Try the world-famous 4-7-8 breathing trick to go to sleep fast.
The 4-7-8 Breathing Technique. This method was developed by Dr. Andrew Weil, a Harvard Medical School graduate, based on yogic pranayama. The steps are simple and it works really well.

1.Get into Position
If you're lying down, lie flat on your back with your hands at your sides or resting on your belly. If you're sitting, place your feet flat on the floor and your hands on your thighs. That's the standard posture described in the books, but honestly, from my own experience, as long as you're naturally comfortable, that's what matters most.
2.Inhale for 4 Seconds
Important – this is different from the chest breathing in the previous method. This is diaphragmatic breathing. First, close your mouth. Then, inhale slowly and steadily through your nose while silently counting to 4. Keep the inhale smooth and even. You don't necessarily have to fill your lungs completely. The key is no tension and no straining for breath.
3.Hold Your Breath for 7 Seconds
Once you've finished inhaling, hold your breath. Silently count to 7. Keep your body relaxed throughout this count – no tensing up your muscles.
4.Exhale for 8 Seconds
Exhale slowly and completely through your mouth while silently counting to 8. Aim to get all the air out. The exhale needs to be slow and controlled. You can purse your lips (like you're whistling) – this helps make the exhale smoother and more even. And pay attention here: just exhale naturally until you feel you're out of breath. Don't actively try to squeeze your belly or force every last bit of air out. You know how you normally end an exhale? That's what we're going for – it's fine to have a little air left in your belly. Just keep repeating this cycle like that, and you'll fall asleep pretty quickly.
Why this magic trick works: Basically, that funky breathing rhythm flips a switch – it kicks your "rest and digest" system (the parasympathetic nervous system) into gear. That calms your whole body down, levels everything out. Plus, breathing like this actually helps your blood grab more oxygen. More oxygen in the blood = your whole system chills out better. And you're blowing out more carbon dioxide too. Here's the cool part: When your blood CO2 drops a bit, your body does some stuff. Like, the blood vessels in your brain? They kinda tighten up just a smidge. Sounds weird, but it means less blood flow up there for a minute. That slows your brain's engine down a bit, shifts it out of high gear and into neutral. Basically, it tells your busy brain, "Hey, take a break." And that? You'll go to sleep crazy fast.
